We are students at Yale University ready to change the language learning and translation industry. We are looking to gamify instant, live, human-to-human language learning and translation.

Why we started this program:

  • As per a report from the Pew Research Center in 2018, fluency in a foreign language is limited to approximately 20% of Americans. As of 2017, the inclusion of foreign language studies in the curriculum is limited, with only 20% of K-12 students studying a foreign language. Enrollment in non-English language courses experienced an unprecedented decline of 16.6% between the fall of 2016 and the fall of 2021. According to a 2019 report from the Modern Language Association, colleges closed over 650 foreign language programs within the last three years. The U.S. House of Representatives will soon deliberate on a funding bill, H.R. 5894, proposed by Republican leadership. This bill has the potential to disrupt federal investments in public education and workforce programs.

  • Moreover, in the United States, a significant issue arises: although ethnic languages may endure in some form into the third and fourth generations, immigrant languages often confront premature extinction, as indicated by "Immigration & Language Diversity in the United States" by Rubén G. Rumbaut and Douglas S. Massey. With each disappearing language, an entire cultural and intellectual heritage is lost. Birdee sweeps in and solves this problem by encouraging the youth and older generation to partake in language learning and preservation through conversations and dialogues.

We are passionate about inspiring others and transforming language learning, translation, and interpretation. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Our Story

Hello!

What We Have

in the Works…

  • We are currently recruiting high school and college students for a program called Birdee: The Phone Buddy Program. Our goal is to pair students interested in learning languages. For instance, we have an Italian student wanting to improve their English matched with an English-speaking student aiming to improve their Italian skills. In this program, participants engage in 10-15 minute conversations in their chosen language. Language learning is most effective when used in real conversations. Thus far, we have recruited over 200 participants and anticipate this number to grow.

  • We are currently working on building a mobile application to make it easier for users to find a phone buddy! Sign up to be notified when it is released!
